Description:

The JSB Sports extravaganza concludes

March 6th 2008: This was a day when Jansons saw its athletes coming out with flying colors.  The college athletics was observed with great jest.  The competing athletes coupled with the cheering audience was exciting and suspense filled.

The events of the day were formally inaugurated by Mr. Periaswamy whose august presence was indeed a feather on the cap of the day's events.  Having represented Tamil Nadu in National Sports and Asian games, he was the best person to start the events of the day.  The crowd was cheered into action with the prelims of the 100 meters dash, shot put and discuss throw.  The finals of the events followed.  The crowd watched with bated breath the athletes lined up at the starting point.  The excitement lasted till the athletes final victory.  Gopal could rightly be called the star of the day for the heads were raised and breaths were held when he came on track of the field.  The valedictory ceremony was graced by the presence of the Vice Chairman Mr. Thirukumaran.  The applause during the prize distribution ceremony echoed in the campus.  The day was full filling for the participants and organizers.

From the editor's desk:

The college sports and games was an opportunity for the stars of the campus to showcase the sportsman spirit of the students.  The college witnessed a couple of weeks of enthusiasm when teams were formed, matches were fought and victories were celebrated.  When sports and games culminated with the track and field events, the sportsman spirit of the teams and the individuals were rightly put to test.  While Volley ball, foot ball, cricket, throw ball and badminton were conducted in the last two weeks, track and field events formed the concluding part of the tou ament.  The team work and dedication of the organizers as well as the participants are to be appreciated.  The editorial board would definitely endow a round of applause to the organizers.

Prof. Palaniswamy: The master mind behind the sports extravaganza

It has been an enthralling week of team work, muscle and fitness for the JSBians.  If the last couple of weeks have been entertaining then we have only one man to thank, Prof. Palaniswamy.  With unparalleled support from the Director, the office staff and the students he has engineered this sport fest to grand success.

Prof. Palaniswamy revealed that the reasons behind initiating the sports meet were in plenty.  Firstly, the budding manager's health was the primary reason.  Only in a healthy body can a healthy mind exist.  Secondly, sports can make us work as a team without making any extra efforts to be a team player.  The students working together towards a common goal, without any distinction of gender, age or designation were clear sign of this.  Thirdly and more importantly to give the much needed boost to the already charged up JSB culture.  He also said that the 2009 batch had a very tough first semester and they needed something different to enable them to tackle this semester's exam with a fresh mind.

When asked about whether it was tough to organize a two week sports event, he said that he thanks the coordinated team work of the office staff, the Director and the student for making hosting of the event easy.  He also said that he was apprehensive in the beginning about the participation etc but is extremely happy with the final outcome.

The sports event has given a tremendous boost for the morale of the students.  The event has most certainly achieved the goals it had set out to do; now the students can refocus on the real task at hand with a renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

Corporate Olympiad 2008 - Day 2

Description:

Hats off to the organizers

The Corporate Olympiad has seen quizzers, art work, team work and more importantly has seen the college buzz with activity.  The campus was busy and an electric atmosphere was prevalent.

Who is responsible for this?  Who made sure the programmes started on time?  Who ensured the participation of all the Jsbians?  The answer is quite obvious isn't it?  The selfless group of dedicated professionals, who ensured that this event took off, flew high and landed safely.  The success of this event is a consequence of their sweat and blood nothing less.  The organizers gave the event a tagline of 'lea ing with fun'; they have attained this feat with remarkable precision.  It is easy to make arm chair judgment, but to carry the cross is a different issue.  This event has proved beyond doubt that we have a talented group of event managers amongst us.  From here we can move only towards one direction, up towards dizzying heights of glory and excellence.

Valedictory Function: Rewarding Excellence

As the sun set on the Corporate Olympiad, the time had come to reward the best.  The function was presided by our Chairman, Director and all faculty members.  Chairman delivered a speech congratulating the organizers, the recent achievements of our students and the recent events in our college.

Then the prizes were distributed to individual event winners and the grand prize to the overall winners.  Sun may have set on the Corporate Olympiad but no one will forget that these two day events have brought together everyone at JSB.  This will be the legacy of the Corporate Olympiad.

Biaxle - A gripping encounter

Day two of the Corporate Olympiad was launched in full gear by the marketing club event named Biaxle.  The program had a very unique format with teams given various aliases.  A cricket ground of some sort was drawn on which each team had to progress by answering a series of questions.  Every team had to reach the center of the field to win.  Unlike the other programs this event had a host, played by Yaagneshwaran who did quite well.  Relevance of some of the questions asked was questionable.  But as the event progressed the audience also got more and more involved, the tempo of the entire event also picked up gradually.  The final event was different will be the understatement of the year.  Firstly a series of fifteen questions were displayed out of which the teams had to bid how many they could answer.  The bid went up till eight questions.  Then one team did emerge victorious in a test of wits and tactics.  The Biaxle certainly lived up to the billing and was entertaining, a feat not too many events can brag about.  It was a humdinger which kept them on the edge of their seats.

Vidhayadhana - The Quizzing Extravaganza

The final event of the Corporate Olympiad had a lot of expectations to fulfill.  It certainly lived to the billing.  Firstly the event involved everyone as anyone could compete in the prelims and mind you, this did throw up some surprises.

The persons or teams with the maximum correct answers were invited on to the stage.  Secondly this event had an active audience support, thanks to the host of the event and the attractive prizes they had on store for the audience.  As the event progressed the host had the audience involved in the event to a great extent.  Few teams scored high in the beginning but the final round was a leveler which brought all the teams close to the coveted first prize.  The winners had to be decided on tie breaks.  The final event was perfect icing on a delicious event called the corporate Olympiad.

Equity Arena

Alpha club created ripples by conducting the event called "equity arena" in a stupendous way.  The organizers of the club came out as raging bulls and conducted the event in a successful way without any chaos.

The first round was associated with quiz which is generally conducted to eliminate the teams and to bring in the best from each and every individual.

From 18 teams, 4 teams were qualified for the final round.  This round is some what different and they tried to successfully bring in the exact picture of how trading takes place in a stock exchange.  The coordinators of this club worked diligently and meticulously so as to minimize errors, bu they could do only to a certain extent.  Since some of the rules were not self explanatory the participants were not comfortable at the beginning, but later they managed to cope with the rest of the rounds.

It has certain drawbacks too, since there is no alte ative plan, they went in for physical or traditional way of trading instead of online trading.  The next drawback was poor time management.  Apart from all these drawbacks, the teams participated with great enthusiasm.

Manovation - A Visionary Approach

The event which kicked off Corporate Olympiad, most certainly set the trend for the whole day.  The competition involved participants making a short pitch on their business plan.  A lot of creative ideas were presented.  The business plans varied from oxygen parlors to mobile shoe polish outlets.  The judges short listed sixteen ideas or business plans for day two.  On day two the participants were asked to do a five minute presentation on their ideas.  Then the plans were tested for their feasibility, sustainability etc by the judges.  The participants were thoroughly tested as they had to face a barrage of questions from the judges.  Lack of corporate presence was deeply felt for this was a good platform to showcase the entrepreneurial bent of the JSBians.

Trio challenge - A fitting finale

The final leg of the Trio challenge was held at the open stage.  The event just like the previous Marc club event had a sort of layout designs drawn on the floor.  The participants had to progress through the ladder and reach the ultimate prize.  The rules laid gave equal opportunity to all, as it did not allow some of the quick starters to get away with things.  The program did struggle because of the blustery conditions, but they went ahead despite the natural elements not being favorable to them.  The organizers helped the participants with a lot of clues, as the quiz got tougher only the best could survive.  The entire Trio challenge event was great, right from the beginning to the end and never faded in intensity.

Arts Club: Creativity Unleashed

The ability to express ones thought and opinions in the form pictures, sculputres etc has always been recognized and rewarded through out history.  The arts club event did just that.  Its relevance in mangement has always been debated but creativity does not grow on trees, it has to be nurtures and brought out.

This event has aimed to do that.  One would normally associate an event with loud speakers or jarring music but this event was punctuated by quietness and soulful music which was a refreshing change.  The competition had two rounds.  The first round held on day one had participants drawing figures denoting 'team work' which was the topic given to them.  It was astounding to see that something simple as team work could have so many forms.  Day two was all about perception; the short listed participants were shown two pictures and were asked to draw with a theme ranging from war to famine to beauty.  The paintings were to be judged on basis of creativity, clarity of expression and the theme which they needed to express.  All these activities unlocked creativity and certainly explored the inner mind of the participants.  There is a lot art can teach management, the arts club event certainly proves this point.

The final Momentum: Pista Veloce

The final round of Pista Veloce pictured a battle of words.  The selected teams used their gift of the gab to fight for and against the topic, "Is Poaching for talent ethical".  This competition did test the communication skills and reasoning ability of the competitors.  Although strong points were put forth by the teams, whether all the points were relevant with respect to the topic of discussion remains debatable.  The Zeus bagged the first prize in Pista Veloce.  The success of the event could be attributed to the team spirit and the coordination of the organizers.  It was a fruition of their hard work and dedication.

Description:

Corporate Olympiad: The in-house race for excellence!

The swords were sharpened, the shields polished and the commanders were ready with their battalions of ten corporate soldiers each, equipped to fight the corporate battle.  With the Director Mr. Mohan lighting the lamp at 9.00 am, the stage was all set for JANSONS to witness the intra collegiate competitions by name, Corporate Olympiad 2008.  The Olympiad aims at unleashing the hidden potentials of the future managers.  All the clubs were brought under one banner with the sole purpose of unlocking the talents of students in various disciplines.

Manovation, which blended management with innovation - a venture of the JEM club set the stage fr the Olympiad.

The feel of the event was carried over by harmony club with its Pista Veloce which indeed set the momentum.  The Trio Challenge by the Integra club and Bizaxle by the Marc club followed suit.  The later part of the evening was dominated by Equity Arena by Alfa club and Picture Talk by Arts club.  A lot more are in store for Day 2.  The spirit and vibrance of the teams were so contagious that the air at Jansons is charged with excitement and enthusiasm.

The Trio Challenge - A Triple Winner

The word systems usually is associated with computers, software and information technology.  But the first round of the trio challenge surely blew the old stereotypes away.  The first challenge involved the participants deciphering a hidden message from a random set of alphabets, certainly a worthy challenge.  Even the judges felt that the questions were quite tough, so did the audience.  In the end the participants did well.

The second challenge certainly tested the participant's instincts and number sense.  Even though they took a while to get going, with a little bit of help from lady luck some were able to decode the correct sequence of random numbers with minimal attempts.  The organizers have done exceedingly well; judging by the quality of the first two challenges can't wait for the third challenge.

Harmony Club: Setting Momentum

Spartans, ambidextrous, dasavathar, neurons, super10, debonair, Sphinx......... all were ready at Lecture Hall 6 when it was time to feel the momentum at Pista Veloce, the harmony club event.  A total of 19 teams contested to find their way to the next round after the prelims named "Walk the Talk".  The deaf and the dumb had to help the blind cross the hurdles.  With the first team crossing all the hurdles to figure out the word "Motivation", all the teams were definitely motivated.  The test did contribute in identifying the communication skills of the participants.  But, how far this could be used as a judging parameter for the entry into HR events remans a question.

A vibrant set of teams, together with a vibrant set of organizers and judges made the competition a lively one.  The second half of the competition was more of the HR kind.  It involved priotrizing and ranking constraints, followed by a panel discussion with one representative from each of the five teams which were short listed.  The programme did showcase the organizing skills of the coordinators.  The homework they did was appreciated by the judges.  "This was an excellent Endeavour by the students to explore their hidden potential.  But, we know our students better.  The best is yet to come", said one of the professors, who believe so much in the abilities of the students.  And, so do the editorial board.

From the editor's desk

Corporate Olympiad can definitely be considered as a wonderful initiative by the students of Jansons to bring out the best in everyone.  A series of events put to test the individual and group's abilities in various disciplines.  When 19 heterogeneous teams constituting a mix of both seniors and juniors took to the task, it spoke volumes about the culture of JSB.  Not one event was left out; their presence was very well felt at each venue.  The energy and zeal shown by the various teams is indeed appreciable.

On the other hand, as one of the judges pointed out, the event could have roped in corporate sponsorship.  Corporate sponsorship coupled with corporate judges would have given a better mileage for the whole event.  It would also have given a better exposure for the participants.  This is a small step towards a long jou ey ahead of JSB in reaching the heights that it aims for.

Description:

A Noble Jou ey begins...

A few of us had an idea of doing something for the community surrounding our campus.  We did ask around and got six prospective locations of which one stood out as a clear winner.  Universal Peace Foundation located sixteen kilometres away from our college was the place we decided to dedicate our time and efforts.  We saw more than sixty children who were eager to lea but lacked the resources and the contacts.  We decided to teach English and which is such an important prerequisite in the mode world.  The Universal Peace Foundation is spread across ten acres of land.  It has a total of 194 residents, the ages of the residents varies from nine months to ninety four.  Just being there filled us with joy which words fail to describe.  We divided the work amongst us these are our experiences after the second successful class:

From the Organizer:

The prospect of managing a full fledged project has been an amazing experience.  As a group we had made a lot of promises, the pressure was into fulfil them.  I am lucky to be surrounded by a group of dedicated friends who made my job a lot easier.  In order to establish this feat a plan was devised in which what is to be done for ten weeks was decided.  Then a check list was made by which I could keep track of things.  The important tasks were to coordinate with the students who would be teachers to prepare the course material, to ensure the finance people got the data they needed, to make sure enough materials were procured by the team and finally to make sure that the vehicles are on time.

From the Finance dept:

CSR was started by a group of 10 members, who voluntarily came forward to render their services on behalf of JSB.  One of the significant aspects is that, we had full cooperation and support from all the faculties in JSB especially our management which is ready to help us in all regards.

We have a separate finance department which looks after all the financial issues related to this activity.  We the members of the finance department take care of all transactions pertaining to this activity.  We keep a record of the incomes, expenditres and all other transactions.Accounts are recorded with utmost care and they are meticulously prepared. This not only gives a clear picture of the entire financial position of the committee, but also helps to have a quick glance of the funds involved. Stringent rules and regulations help our department to function effectively and efficiently.

From the eyes of the students who teach:

Today English education is one of the prerequisites for the entry into any profession.  When the economically better children have the opportunity for a good English education, there still are children with the thirst for English education, but lack the opportunity to receive it.   We started off by teaching them the basics of English, which would definitely be of help to them.

This indeed was a fantastic experience.  This was the first time we stood at the other end of the classroom.  We were no more the listeners, but the teachers.  In front of us sat a whole lot of 'students' genuinely interested in all that we said.  Every time we spoke a sentence in English, we could see the gleaming eyes, demanding for more.  They were receptive to every word that comes out of the teacher. We were immediately accepted as one among them.  I should also make a mention of the lea ing we had.  We shared with them our knowledge in English and expected nothing in retu .  But, each day we spent with them, we are creating memories.  They taught us another aspect of life.  Each day they teach us how to be happy, just with what we have, without cribbing over what we don't have.  They show us how to aim for better things and to work towards it.  The enthusiasm they show is contagious.  We carry it with us every time we leave the place, together with the love and affection and the hope to be there the next week.

CSR - Women's Self Help Group

An idle mind is a devil's workshop.  The CSR team aimed at not only educating the children but to also enable the women working there to use their free time in a useful manner and provide them with a source of income by teaching and training them in making handicraft products.
We the first product we trained the women is to make paper bags.  With a mixture of enthusiasm and apprehension, we sat down to teach the women to fold paper according to required dimensions to perfection.  Soon, their mood changed from observation to active participation.  We left them materials required for them to practice to make more bags.
Teaching them to express their creativity with a brush in hand would be tricky since most of them were used to the task of cooking and cleaning or so we thought.  But, they mastered the art pretty fast and were eager to experiment more and lea .  And the audience of interested small children kept them encouraged.
Our plans included teaching the women to paint simple designs on these bags that would make them attractive and marketable.  Each time we leave with promises to retu to teach them more interesting skills.

The CSR team will market these handmade bags and reach the profits to them for their betterment.
