Graduation Day 2009
Author: Mr. C.K.Ranganathan
Date: 2009-05-23 00:00:00

Description:

Chief Guest: Mr. C. K. Ranganathan,
                      Chairman & Managing Director,
                      CavinKare Pvt. Ltd.,
                      Chennai.

Batch : 2006 - 08

Date : 23-05-2009

Time : 6.00 PM

Venue : Padmam Auditorium

Jansons School of Business was very proud and doubly happy to have Mr C K Ranganathan, Chairman & Managing Director, CavinKare Private Limited, Chennai as the Chief Guest of its 5th Graduation Day, on 23.05.2009 @ 6.00 PM.  Addressing 120 students of the graduating batch of 2006-08 and guests at the Padmam Auditorium, Mr Ranganathan recounted his early days as a youth, and how many considered him unfit for business.  But, today the CavinKare group has a tu over of over Rs.500 crores.  It all began with his father's simple, yet timeless, philosophy: What a rich man uses, even a poor man must be able to use it.  Thus was bo the sachet revolution, and the rest is history.  As pioneers in producing and selling shampoos in sachets, CavinKare has a plethora of brands in its repertorie.  It was the daringness to make a mark in the field of business, coupled with his inquisitive mind, that made him break away from his family-run business and start off on his own, earlier christened "Chik India".  This soon metamorhped into the giant Indian multinational, CavinKare, and is a nightmare for many foreign consumer goods companies.  Taking in hand the specific needs of the graduating batch, Mr. Ranganathan advised many aspiring and would-be entrepreneurs to always be brave enough to try out new things in business.  It was certain that they would, at some point of time, come face-to-face with failure, and it is during such trying times that they must not lose heart, and must muster enough courage to lea from the failures and set them right as soon as possible.  This was the true hallmark of a successful business person, he said.

In his own pleasant way, Mr. Ranganathan wished the graduates the very best, and hoped that the life-lessons he had recounted would help them to see business and life in true colours.  He wished them all well, and looked forward to see many a successful entrepreneur come into sight.

EIP on 'Appreciating Law' by Mr. PVS Giridhar and Mrs. Swapna.

There were four presentations by the resource persons - two each.

In the presentation by Mr. Giridhar, the core issues of what law was and why it was important to business was discussed and deliberated.  Light was thrown on the various components of law, and it was surmised that any legislation, for that matter, would have to have political and social dimensions.  Moreover, law, by its inherent nature, interacted with three players: the state, society and the market.  And, during such intermingling, it was only natural that the market has to contend with the state for its survival, and it was their particular aspect of law that makes it of great import in the business environment.  There was also an interesting detour on the difference between law on one side, and social / moral codes on the other.

There were the roles of Legislature, Judiciary and Executives one had to be conversant with while doing business.  Besides, a general awareness and appreciation of law comes only when a thorough understanding of the relationships between and among gove ment and people, and the relationship between gove ment and other institutions is guaranteed.  The presentation also opened up issues relating to five significant pieces of legislation relevant to business:

The remedies available for civil and criminal judgements were briefly dealt with, and newer forms of remedies like arbitration and mediation were explained in brief.

Mrs. Swapna's presentation centred on Intellectual Property (IP) laws and their usefulness to the business environment.  There was a quick perusal of the types of IPs.  The economic and social logic behind patents, copyrights and trademarks were enumerated.  Special attention was given to the issue of IP strategy and business, especially with regard to questions of value extraction and profitability (often translating into competitive edge).  Why an IP strategy will help in easing market turbulence was also dealt with.  Interspersed with examples from the IP field, the presentation focused on the importance of leveraging on the so-called IP Waste.  Concomitant factors like value translation, value transportation and licensing were taken up and discussed.  We, in India, are like to the old man sitting atop a hill that has huge reserves of gold - neither exploiting the gold, nor allowing others to do it.  Such is the case of IP in India, and it was time for us to leverage the value of IP we hold, and also give the discipline of IP strategy prime importance in regular business courses.

The EIP ended with a Q&A session, where the following three issues were taken up, and delineated for better comprehension:
