Topic : Gender in Family Business : Findings of Simmons Research
Jansons School of Business (JSB) organized a One-day Programme with the visiting team from US that consisted of Prof. Vipin Gupta, Roslyn Solomon Jaffe Chair Professor in Strategy & Director, Inte ational Outreach, Simmons College School of Management, Boston, USA along with 2 B-School Professors and 15 management students. Prof. Vipin Gupta is also Co-Principal Investigator of the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effeciveness Research Program (GLOBE) of Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, US, that involves 62 countries for the study of culture, leadership styles, and organizational performance. Simmons College School of Management is the only exclusive institution for female management students in USA and its most popular MBA programme trains the students to become successful leaders and managers.
In the First Session of the programme, Prof. Vipin Gupta presented his research findings on 'Gender in Family Business' conducted as part of GLOBE in various countries which highlighted the role of women as leaders and managers and the influence of culture in family business. The findings revealed that women entrepreneurs, by nature of their multi-tasking abilities commonly used for balancing their professional and familial lives, contribute to the development of family business more prominently than their male counterparts and these family businesses managed by female leaders had stable performance consistently. He added that it was also found that women leaders were more adaptable to application of new technologies for their business needs. He also compared their roles with that of women leaders in Indian family business. The MBA students of JSB were provided a good exposure to the cross-cultural perspectives on family business management and the significant role & influence of gender in business.
An interaction with 14 family business entrepreneurs (of which 12 were JSB alumni) was arranged in the Second Session, wherein each entrepreneur was interviewed by a team of management students from both Simmons College and JSB together. The session provided a rare opportunity for JSB students to understand and compare the family business scenario in Indian and USA contexts. It was also an eye-opener for Simmons College students to comprehend the leadership styles and issues related to Indian family businesses better.
In the Third Session in the afte oon, the visiting US team along with some Professors and Students of JSB visited the factory of SCM Textiles Spinners, a unit of The Chennai Silks Group at Thekkalur. The team interviewed Mr. K. Vinayakam, Managing Director who explained during the interaction how the Chennai Silks group focused on establishing and achieving the quality standards for their operations since inception. He made a mention of the committed contribution of their women workers in the various sections of textile manufacturing. The MD also described how the market research findings derived from the retailing end of their business helped them develop creative designs and varieties in their Jewellery and Textile product categories suiting the changing preferences of consumers. In the course of the interaction, the visiting US team was also provided an insight into the leadership styles, HR practices, technology adoption, business challenges, expansion initiatives and succession planning adopted in family business in Indian context. Subsequently, the team visited the various sections of the factory to gain a first-hand exposure to textile production processes.
The one-day programme provided a good platform for both JSB and Simmons College management students to understand and appreciate the cultural dimensions of each other well and share their curricular lea ing experiences to one other. The programme is also expected to pave the way for further joint-working between the two institutions in terms of students exchange and collaborative programmes in the future.

Description:
Consumer behaviour and brand performance, the two crucial topics for a marketer, was handled with undeniable flair by a man who has appreciable experience in the field of brand building and studying consumer behaviour. The man was Mr.Ashok, from 'Keybase'. He conducted a workshop that instigated the thought process leading to consideration of various business models. He spoke at lengths about the pre-test considerations that have to be taken into account while building a brand. Building a brand itself is a difficult task then think about creating brand equity and customer loyalty.
Mr. Ashok demonstrated all this, not by dictum but by actually let us experience the toll by working on exercises. The workshop was filled with activity through out the day which was really a lea
ing experience. He took us through the idiosyncracies of the customer satisfaction framework and also the information needed in choosing a marketing strategy. He facilitated a forum to understand the very many crucial questions that needs to be answered while developing a marketing strategy. By the end of the day, there were a lot of take aways which wasn't merely theory but mostly how a marketer works in an organization in given a situation. The workshop did add value to what I already knew and did not know.
