Marketing Debate

Event : Debate on Marketing is Ethical

The first event organised by MARC for the semester was a Debate. The topic for the debate was “Marketing is ethical”. There were two teams with five each, waging a verbal war against each other.

There were two rounds. In the first round the teams could put forth their points. The second round was meant to counter the points of the opposite member of the team.

Arguments were back and forth, and some of them included: how right it is to market cigarettes, despite a ban on its advertising; Tata Tea advertisements on reducing corruption or asking the public to go and vote; and use of unbridled sex appeal in advertisements.

Each team participated actively.

Mr. Ruben Thomas, GM-Sales, Vodafone Essar Cellular Limited, Coimbatore, delivered a lecture on ‘Channel management in FMCG/FMCS’. The lecture began with highlighting the significance of distribution in today’s context. Direct and Indirect Distribution with detailed discussions on various modes of reaching the consumers, including MLM & electronic channel, were thoroughly covered. He explained some of the methods of order taking and delivery like Pre-selling and Route sales. Mr.Ruben delineated the various factors that influence the selection of channel members like Distributors & Retailers. He shared many decision situations that are generally faced in distribution from his experience in Pepsi and Vodafone. The session was highly interactive.

Mr. Manish Singhal addressed the students of 2012 Batch, and shared his thoughts on “Lessons for Life, Lessons in Life”. In this interactive session, he related to the students the need and importance of real-life experiences, when dealing with people. He focused specifically on motivation, lea ing, attitude development, and hard-work. The three significant lessons that every MBA should know were:

He spoke about specific examples and experiences with respect to team work, discipline and lea ing from failures. His interesting presentation ended with urging the students to “Never Ever Give Up”.



Pravesh 2010

During 13-14 October, 2010, Pravesh 2010, an out-bound training programme, was jointly organized by Jansons School of Business and Karl Kubel Institute for Development Education (KKID), Anaikaty, at KKID’s campus, located amidst picturesque hills. It was to enhance and fine-tune the team spirit and team-building skills among the students of the 2012 Batch that this programme was designed.

The jou ey of Pravesh 2010 started on the evening of 12th October 2010. The students were given a warm welcome which was followed with the allotment of rooms. The first event of the evening was a music meditation session, followed by a random division of students into four groups, each under a trainer.

On 13th October 2010, the day commenced early with a brainstorming session within each group, on the agenda for the performance of various cultural events that were to be conducted that day. After that invigorating session, an open discussion with the transgenders and victims of HIV positive was organized. During the post-lunch session a visit to a tribal village was organized, with instructions that the students were to present their experiences through a poster competition the next day. A cultural extravaganza, during late evening, was witnessed, with the active participation of the four groups of students, along with the performances of the tribals. The post-dinner session was devoted for the preparation for the poster competition with the theme “The Bridge We Discovered”, which had to be displayed the following mo ing.

On 14th October, the day began early with the display of the posters, and the results were announced. During the first half of the day, students interacted with the trainers on a variety of issues like teamwork, understanding self and others, through various team games. The last event was “Thrillers 2010”, where the groups had to compete with each other by analyzing their strengths and weakness.

There was a closing ceremony, and all the students bid adieu to the KKID staff and soon found their way into the familiar environs of JSB.

Mr. Martin Antony, Director, Lilliput Kidswear Ltd., addressed students who had taken Retail Management as one of the electives, on the role and importance of Information Technology in Retailing. The session included a comprehensive lecture by the guest, student presentations and discussions in the related subjects. Mr.Martin highlighted the significance of IT in Retail and how the retailing companies gain competitive advantage and achieve business efficiencies by implementing IT systems like EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), Customer Database Management, etc. Mr. Martin provided insights on Electronic Retailing and Retail web site management with relevant cases and examples.

Mr. R.V. Rajan, Chairman of Anugrah Madison Advertising Pvt.Ltd, Chennai - the Rural Marketing Division of Madison Communication, Mumbai - had a day of Interaction with both 2012 Batch and 2011 Batch (Rural Marketing Elective students).

In the mo ing, he introduced the "Fascinating World of Advertising" to the 2012 Batch Students. Starting from the Pre-Independence to the current Post-Reforms period, Mr. Rajan traced the history and growth of Advertising with particular reference to South India and Tamil Nadu. Throughout his presentation, he used a variety of TVCs to drive home the evolution of advertising during this period. Towards the end, he listed down the various career options open to Management Graduates, in the broader area of Advertising.

In the afte oon, Mr.Rajan gave a talk to the Rural Marketing Elective students of the 2011 Batch, specifically on the importance of “Rural Communication”. Drawing heavily on his rich experience extending over 25 years in Rural Communication, Mr.Rajan shared his nuggets of wisdom. Through carefully selected TVCs, he brought out the need to differentiate rural communication. He also spent time on the Projects done by these students on Bharath Darshan, and ended the session with his critical comments and suggestions for improvement.

The third E-club event was Crazy Idea. The teams were asked to come out with craziest idea that they thought impossible to implement. Before the start of the event, the ideas given by each team was swapped. Then, the teams presented the ideas that they got and how they’ll implement it. Teams were allotted 5 minutes for presentation followed by the Q&A session for 2 minutes. Totally 9 teams participated. The winners of the event will be announced at the end of E-series.

In this highly interactive session with the 2012 Batch, Mr Raja wanted to know what were the kinds of questions that aspiring managers had in mind., and he made sure that all their doubts were cleared. After joining JSB in 2006, he took Finance as his specialization. He further encouraged students to take up their specialization on the basis of their interests only.

Recounting his MBA days, Mr Raja stressed the importance of language and communication.

One other thing that he insisted on was to do well enough in academics and exams, so that it would be easy to get through the initial phases of placement.

Mr Raja impressed upon this new batch that reading books and newspapers was an essential ingredient for the success of a manager. He recommended two books: “MADE IN JAPAN by AKIO MORITA” and “AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HENRY FORD”.

He wished them all the very best for their future.

NITHYA Wins TEDx

JSB is proud to announce that Ms Nithya of the 2011 Batch has won the first prize in the TEDx Event organized at The Residency on Sep 29, 2010. She wins a trip to Singapore. Her talk was on ways to reduce global poverty. Congratulations!

To spread awareness about the UN Millennium Goals, TEDxCoimbatore organized an event called “The Future We Make”. Student speakers from various colleges in Coimbatore, participated in the event, giving their solutions to attain the goals. The Top Five contestants performed live at The TEDx Party organized at The Residency, Coimbatore, on Sep 29, 2010.



B-Plan

B-Plan was the second event of E-series. The theme of the event was “Tourism”. It was a continuation of the previous event, “Ideation & Opportunity Analysis”, wherein the teams had to present a complete B-plan in detail for their business ideas. Teams were given 5 minutes for presentation followed by a Q&A session for 2 minutes. Totally, 15 teams had registered for this event. The teams were asked to submit a hard copy of their plan for the reference of the judges. The winners for the event will be announced at the end of the series.

Paper Plane Corporation

PARTICIPANTS: Batches 2011 and 2012

Paper Plane Corporation is a simulation game where participating teams produce paper war planes and supply to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The game is to simulate conditions of working as a corporate team fostering the skills of team building, team decision making, planning and executing. This game also draws from the operational and financial competencies of the participants. It is a comprehensive management game highlighting the strategic significance of human resources and human relations across functional areas.

The event “Mock Court”, kept the audience at the edge of their seats, as the teams were arguing and cross examining to prove their point. Teams were given cases and they were asked to analyse the case and perform a court trail. Two teams were given with a case, where one team would be prosecuting, while the other defending the accused, just like what is seen in a court room.. Each trail was given a time of about half an hour to justify their stance.
